ESTA is an electronic travel authorization. Since 2009, the ESTA form has been an official travel document for the USA. It can only be requested by people from visa waiver countries such as France.
This means that instead of a U.S. visa, nationals of Visa Waiver Program members can apply for an ESTA, which is much quicker and easier to apply for. To qualify for a USA visa waiver, these citizens must hold an electronic or biometric passport, and be traveling for tourism, business or transit purposes, for a maximum period of 90 days. Once these conditions have been met, the ESTA application is valid.
